Notes & Testimonials from Sondra Bennett, Years ago, as a New York Broadway actor, I was on my way to an audition and noticed that wherever I went people seemed to be acting. On the bus, in business buildings, on the street…everyone was performing in their own fashion. Some were acting nice to me even though I could tell they didn’t mean it, some acted important – and they did mean it. Some played dumb; some were more dramatic than others, some demanded attention, and some would act as if they didn’t see me even though I caught their glances. I later labeled it “social acting.” As I became more and more fascinated with people watching, I saw that people had different styles of acting and that each style had certain tendencies. Being an incurable thespian, I likened it to people falling into various theatrical genres noting, “Oh, he’s action oriented”; she’s high drama; Jerry favors silly comedy, while Ashley liked smart comedy. Others were drawn to compelling adventure, fervent love, romantic comedy, thought-provoking mystery, sci-fi, mystical fantasy & other genre’s. I noticed fellow actors unconsciously type-casting themselves and being put in categorical boxes by directors because of their genre tendencies. So, I began to label our tendencies as “mental actor” or “physical actor,” and so forth according to their genre attraction. In those days, I was just noticing these things quietly to myself without much thought or discussion about it to anyone. I began developing this training in 1984 with a small group of interested actors and soon began working with stroke and head injured patients at Daniel Freeman Hospital in Inglewood, CA. The work proved magical for many who rediscovered their ability to create a different attitude (character quality) as part of their healing process. T E S T I M O N I A L................................................................................................................Performance Style Awareness has helped my patients better understand themselves and consequently how to better relate to others. They now know they do not have to live on their tragic side. Your work has reminded them that they can choose to act from their comic side. ~ B. Hadler, speech & language pathologist Your work has changed my life for the better. It has given me a new freedom of expression that I did not even have before the stroke. ~ K.R., Stroke patient ...................................................................................................................................... Later, I worked with cancer patients and some of the oncology staff at Cedar Sinai Cancer Center in Los Angeles. In class, we all began to witness how the way we think can influence how we feel and act. Psychoneuroimmunology, (PNI) the study of how psychological processes in the brain interrelate with both the nervous system and the immune system, was a relatively new field at that time, so my classes were of interest to a few of the curious medical staffers. It was determined not a cure for cancer, but decidedly a helpful support process for living with a disease.T E S T I M O N I A L................................................................................................................The response from our patients and staff that attended was overwhelmingly positive. We certainly want to discuss future workshops. ~ R. Wagner, Director of Marketing & PR, Cedar Sinai Cancer Center ....................................................................................................................................Performance Style Awareness Programs continued to develop for business people and life purposes. I have taught it in educational institutes such as UCLA Extension, Santa Monica College, art and design schools, and my own series of classes for business people, artists of various disciplines and the general public. Penn, Coordinator Special Ed, Santa Monica College After taking a few courses at UCLA, I feel that this class is superior. ~ UCLA Extension student It was more meaningful to my work life than I had anticipated and gave me in-depth understanding of how to approach different clients that I have had difficulty with in the past. ~ UCLA Extension student Probably the best course I’ve taken at Extension, and there have been many! UCLA Extension student The idea of starting from a “creative void” is most useful in my business and gave me insight into other parts of my life. ~ Architectural Design student ....................................................................................................................................... As a weekly consultant for eight years at a major entertainment company, I successfully used Performance Style Awareness Programs to help executives; management and artists work through their performance style differences. Her work makes my work – work! ~ Judy, entertainment co. security dept. Sondra Bennett taught me to center myself before contributing to a hectic workplace and that in most cases we can choose how we respond to a given situation. Her teaching methods are gentle and very effective. ~ G.G, Executive Associate, entertainment company Sondra's concept of " Performance Style Awareness " resonated with me as a department manager in a large entertainment company, responsible for the success of many projects and a large staff. Her "Performance Styles" approach presented a positive way of viewing character traits and skill-set differences that allowed me to think of creative ways to resolve personnel issues and form effective teams. The "Empty Stage" exercise was a great tool for envisioning success in all aspects of life. As
a personal performance coach, Sondra helped me lose my fear of public
speaking, and discover the joy of having something useful and even entertaining
to say to an audience. Under her skillful, perceptive direction and
unwavering confidence in me, I found I could stop hyperventilating and start
enjoying being a "featured speaker" when called upon to do so.
~ A.T. Department Manager ....................................................................................................................................... I have also taught this performance process in law firms, CPA firms, and other companies and organizations. T E S T I M O N I A L................................................................................................................. I was resistant in the beginning. I thought I had done it all and Sondra showed me that there is always more to learn; more I can apply to my bag of tricks. ~ J. Michaels, district manager of computer sales companyWorking with people I didn’t like was always a drudgery and made me irritable, but with your process (PSAP) I now see it as a challenge and even enjoyable. Basically, I’ve learned how to change. ~ R. Vollins, CPA Now they (employees) see ways they get themselves stuck in character attitudes that have a negative impact on the quality of their work and their relationships with co-workers. But the most exciting thing is that you (Sondra Bennett) have given them opportunities to “try on new characters” during class and I have witnessed them integrating these new attitudes into their work lives, long after you have left the scene. This means your work is sustaining and that is rare. You have brought a new sense of creativity and aliveness into the workplace. ~ L.N., Hughes senior communications specialist Quick Change Studio is a wonderful innovative tool for the business community.
